Efficient and Safe Driving Efficient and Safe Driving

Efficient driving can mean saving between 10 and 25% in fuel costs and associated emissions.

Efficient driving techniques during travel saves fuel and reduces emissions of polluting gases, especially CO2.

Following are some conclusions from the Manual on Efficient Driving published by the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings (IDAE):

  • vehicles use 15% of the total energy consumed in Spain, 98% of which comes from petroleum derivatives.40% of total CO2 emissions come from road transport.
  • Proper driving can save 10 to 25% in fuel consumption and cut CO2 emissions by 15%.
  • To achieve these savings drivers should adhere to the following tips:

    1. Check the tires every month to ensure correct pressure. A less than adequate pressure can increase fuel consumption by up to 4%.
    2. Consider the amount of luggage being transported. The transport of 100 kilos of weight consumes 6% more fuel.
    3. It is preferable to shift slowly, always respecting speed limits, and to keep a safe distance to avoid unnecessary braking, acceleration and consumption.
    4. Start without stepping on the accelerator.
    5. A uniform speed should be maintained whenever possible . Driving at high speeds increases fuel consumption. Car manufacturers do the math on the fuel consumption of their vehicles based on a speed of 90 km/h, the speed at which minimal consumption is achieved. At 120km/h, for example, consumption is 30% higher.
    6. Air conditioning or window? At 25 degrees, the air conditioner increases fuel consumption by 12%.In the city, at low speeds, opening the window is more efficient than using air conditioning. On the highway, at higher speeds, the opposite is true.
