Tyre-size equivalence
The main purpose of the MOT test is to check the general condition and safety features of the vehicle.
THE MOT
Check that your tyres are approved
Before changing the tyres of your vehicle you should bear in mind that these must meet the applicable requirements for each type and model of vehicle.
Remember that the tyres of your vehicle must be approved by the manufacturer, as must their size, characteristics and configuration or equivalence.
All tyres on the same axle must be of the same type.
Equivalent tyres:
LOAD RATING
The load capacity rating must be equal to or higher than that of any of the tyres listed on the vehicle's MOT card.
SPEED RATING
The speed rating must be equal to or higher than that of any of the tyres listed on the vehicle's MOT card.
RIM
The rim must be suitable for the installed tyre.
CLEARANCE
There must be sufficient clearance between the tyre and other parts of the vehicle.
TRACK WIDTH
Tolerance of +30 mm and -30 mm on the track width that appears on the vehicle's MOT card must not be exceeded.
DIRECTION OF ROTATION
The tyre's direction of rotation must be observed.
DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCE
Permissible tolerance of between + 3 % and - 3 % for the nominal outer diameter

Tyres marked with the letters FRT, free rolling tyres, must only be installed on bearing axles. Not on steering or drive axles.
Bearing axles are any axle of an automotive vehicle other than a drive or steering axle (for example the steering axle at the rear of a vehicle and the drive axle at the front).
