Considering current fuel prices, which have reached record highs, it is worth following a few tips to reduce consumption and save up to €500 a year on petrol or diesel.
Tyres
Driving with tyre pressures below the recommended level increases fuel consumption by up to 2% on urban roads and 4% on interurban roads. Remember to increase your tyre pressure when travelling with a heavy load. Otherwise, your tyres will suffer greater wear and will need to be replaced sooner.
Higher gears
Driving in the highest possible gear can significantly reduce fuel consumption. Bear in mind that from 50 km/h onwards, you should already be driving in 4th or 5th gear. For vehicles equipped with a Start/Stop system, it is recommended to switch off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop.
Good driving habits
Driving at a moderate speed and maintaining a safe distance are characteristics of good driving that also help save fuel. Accelerating and braking progressively, at traffic lights or when overtaking, are basic yet useful ways to control fuel consumption.
Air conditioning
Using the air conditioning increases fuel consumption by between 10% and 20%. It is also advisable to keep the windows closed when driving on the road, as open windows affect aerodynamics and fuel consumption.
Boot
Continuing with aerodynamics, if your boot is full, it is advisable to use an aerodynamic roof box rather than tying luggage to the roof rack without arranging it properly. The latter, besides being dangerous, also increases fuel consumption.
An important factor, perhaps the most important, is keeping your vehicle in good condition. Regular checks are therefore essential. Book your ITV appointment at any of our Applus+ stations and we'll make sure everything is in order.
